A big fear that many people have is going to the dentist. Even a simple visit can seem like a major deal, but sedation dentistry is often a great way to help them relax. It’s designed to ease their anxiety and it’s generally safe. However, there are some instances where someone might not be the best candidate. Here’s what you need to know and what can make you ineligible to get it.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

As a quick refresher of how sedation dentistry works, it will calm your nerves and help you feel have a more comfortable experience while in your dentist’s chair. When you get it, it won’t make you fall asleep, but you may doze off on your own because you feel so at ease. If this does happen, you can be easily woken up with light nudges.

There are a couple of different types of sedation, such as nitrous oxide and IV sedation. The former gives you a mild relaxing feeling, while the latter is the strongest. Both have their own pros and cons, so your dentist will help you weigh them to ensure you get the right one for the treatment you need.

Why Would Someone Not Be Able to Get Sedation Dentistry?

Although sedation dentistry is a great choice for many, there are some cases where it may not be the best. These are some factors that can make someone ineligible to get it:

  • Pregnancy: For those who are expecting, it’s recommended to avoid any unnecessary medications as they can increase the risk of issues in the fetus.
  • Certain Allergies: A small group may be allergic to the sedatives used in these services.
  • Some Medications: Several medicines shouldn’t be mixed with sedation as they can cause adverse effects.
  • Specific Medical Conditions: Sleep apnea, chronic bronchitis, and respiratory disease are some conditions that can lead to a higher chance of complications.
  • Stuffy Nose: In particular, with nitrous oxide, congestion can make it harder for you to breathe it in, thus you won’t get the full effects.
  • Alcohol Intake: These types of beverages can lead to trouble breathing or lower blood pressure when you get dental sedation.

In the end, you deserve to get the treatment you need, but your dentist won’t sacrifice your safety for it. They will make sure you’re a good candidate for sedation dentistry; that way, you have a positive experience with it. If you aren’t, then they can talk to you about other ways you can ease your anxiety and fears.
