What is TMJ Disorder?

The temporomandibular joints, located on either side of the head, connect the jaw to the skull and allow for the opening and closing of the mouth. This unique joint consists of the rounded bone of the upper jaw and a cartilage disc, held together by ligaments that guide jaw movement.
TMJ disorder refers to any issue that causes jaw pain and hinders the proper function of this complex joint, which includes the muscles, ligaments, discs, and bones.

Types of TMJ Treatment

TMD is a complex condition, which means a thorough evaluation is necessary before we can suggest any treatments. Dr. Parmar will take X-rays or use our CBCT machine to obtain a detailed view of your TMJ and surrounding tissues. She will also ask about your symptoms to better understand their extent and nature. Based on the findings, Dr. Parmar may recommend one of the following treatment options:
Occlusal Splint

An occlusal splint is a custom mouthguard that relieves TMJ pain by gently repositioning the jaw for improved alignment. Worn only during sleep, it helps the jaw muscles relax and heal. Many patients find relief after just a few weeks or months of use.
Equilibration/Occlusal Adjustment

A misaligned jaw can lead to improper tooth alignment and nerve irritation, causing pain. To address this, we perform an equilibration or occlusal adjustment. We first analyze your bite and then gently reshape areas of enamel to ensure smooth alignment, restoring balance and comfort.
BOTOX for TMJ Treatment

Many patients think that BOTOX injections are only for treating wrinkles. However, studies have shown that BOTOX can be used for TMJ treatment with tremendous results! These injections target tense jaw muscles to temporarily relax them for up to several months, resulting in a huge reduction in symptoms of TMJ disorder (TMD). Dr. Parmar is a certified BOTOX provider and has years of experience in helping patients ease their jaw pain with this unique treatment.
What Is BOTOX?

BOTOX is the brand name of a diluted form of botulinum toxin. When it is injected into muscles, it limits their movements and forces them to relax. That is the mechanisms through which BOTOX traditionally smooths out wrinkles, and it is also the explanation for how it can help to address TMD. Since muscle tension and spasms play a huge role in creating the many symptoms of TMD, BOTOX can force key muscle groups in your face to stop overworking, which can have widespread benefits for nearby structures.
Addressing TMD with BOTOX is a fast and relatively simple process, and because of Dr. Parmar’s extensive training and experience, you can be confident your treatment will have the best possible chance of success.
Are You a Good Candidate for BOTOX for TMJ Treatment?

Dr. Parmar utilizes BOTOX to treat a wide range of symptoms connected to TMD, including:
- Jaw pain
- Facial pain
- Migraines and headaches
- Bruxism
- Teeth grinding and clenching
- And more
Keep in mind that while BOTOX is an excellent means of symptom relief, it is not designed to address the root cause of TMD. That is why BOTOX is often used alongside other treatments, such as occlusal splints or occlusal adjustments, to optimize long-term results.
How Can BOTOX Treat TMJ Disorder?

BOTOX is an effective way to force the facial muscles to relax and provide significant relief from the pain of TMJ disorder. In fact, one study from 2012 found that this treatment can significantly reduce pain associated with mouth movement for around three months following treatment. A separate study found that BOTOX helped to improve the symptoms of 90% of participants’ TMD symptoms.
If you are suffering from TMJ disorder, come see Dr. Parmar and the rest of our team for a consultation to discover if occlusal splints, equilibration/occlusal adjustments, or BOTOX can help!
