Do you have a nagging toothache or notice a dark spot on your tooth? You may be wondering if it’s time for a dental filling. While some signs are obvious, like pain or visible damage, there are other clues that might suggest you need a filling. When you know the common symptoms, you can visit your dentist to keep your smile healthy and free from further damage. Here is what you should know about dental fillings.

Common Signs That You Need a Dental Filling

If you have pain or sensitivity in your teeth and have a scheduled dental appointment anytime soon, these are some symptoms to look out for:

  • Throbbing or Sharp Pain: If you experience pain when chewing or biting, it can be a sign of damaged enamel from a cavity or tooth decay, exposing the sensitive inner layers of the tooth.
  • Dark Spots: As cavity-causing bacteria compromise your enamel, the darker layer of dentin underneath may begin to show. These spaces are also easily strained by food and drinks. Discoloration on your teeth can be an early sign of decay.
  • Tooth Sensitivity: If hot, cold, or even sweet foods cause discomfort, it can be a sign that the enamel on your tooth is thinning and the underlying layer is exposed. Thinned enamel and the resulting sensitivity are often some of the first signs of tooth decay.
  • Flossing Thread Breaks: If floss tears each time you floss a particular tooth, it might be due to an uneven surface caused by a cavity between your teeth.
  • Damage to an Old Filling: When a filling is loose or damaged, bacteria can enter the tooth and lead to decay.

Steps Involved in Getting a Dental Filling

When you have these signs, it’s important to let your dentist know right away so they can examine the tooth to see if a filling is right for you. They will look at your teeth in a visual exam and with an X-ray. X-rays give your dentist a better picture of your teeth, showing them signs of enamel damage or weakening that can’t be caught by the human eye.

Dental fillings can be made of silver, composite resin, porcelain, or gold. Composite resin is one of the most popular options. It is easy to match to your natural tooth color, and with the right care, it can last three to ten years or longer! Some people don’t favor the other options because of the shiny metal appearance or cost.

When it’s time for a dental filling, the process is straightforward. Your dentist prepares the tooth by removing the decay, cavity, or damage. This effectively stops any pain, discomfort, or sensitivity. Then, they bond the composite resin to the tooth and shape it to your natural bite.

Being aware of the signs that you may need a dental filling and understanding the simple process involved can help you take control of your oral health.
