Springtime has commenced, so it is the perfect time of year to get started throwing out and organized the clutter that’s accumulated over the past 12 months. As you are cleaning up around your home, you may as well take the time to freshen up your smile while you’re at it. The weather is getting warmer, and you don’t want to be spending your summer dealing with dental issues. Here are a handful of tips to benefit your smile.

Pick Up a New Toothbrush

If it’s been more than three months since you purchased your current toothbrush, it’s probably time for you to pick up a new one. If you prefer using an electric toothbrush instead, you should replace the head about every 12 weeks or when the bristles are starting to look like they’ve seen better days. The bristles become worn and frayed the more you use them, so they won’t be nearly as effective at keeping your smile clean. Now is a perfect time to head to your local drug store to pick out a fresh one.

Check If Your Mouthwash Expired

You’re used to checking the condiments and dairy products in the fridge to see if they have passed their prime, but did you check your bathroom cupboard? If you’re like many of us, your giant bottle of mouthwash has been sitting there for quite a while – maybe even over a year! It doesn’t hurt to check the expiration date. Take a look at the back of the bottle. If it’s expired, throw it out and get a new one.

Clean Your Case

If you have a retainer, clear aligners, or a nightguard, you are constantly taking the time to rinse, brush, and soak it. However, when was the last time you cleaned your case? It’s a good idea to clean it from time to time as well. Soak it and give it a good scrub. This way, you can wash away all the dried food debris, saliva, and bacteria.

Attend Your Regular Checkups

You should see your dentist every six months for regular cleanings and checkups. If it’s been more than six-months since your last visit, give your dentist a call to schedule your next appointment. This way, your hygienist will be able to remove plaque and tartar from hard-to-reach places, and your dentist will ensure that your smile is in optimal shape.

Have Your Dentures Cleaned

If you wear dentures, you are certainly familiar with the cleaning and soaking process. Even if you don’t have any natural teeth left, it’s still a good idea for you to see your dentist every six months. In addition to checking your mouth for issues like gum disease and oral cancer, they will also give your dentures a more thorough cleaning than you’re able to do at home. If you are having any issues with your dentures, now is a great time to bring those up so they can be resolved.

This spring, don’t leave your smile behind! By implementing the steps listed above, you can start our fresh again.
